The Shining Sea Bike Path
People come from all over the world to explore the Shining Sea bike path in Woods Hole. This path was once the railroad tracks into our little village, but the rail bed has been converted into a bike trail, far from world of cars. This unique path passes through woodlands, marshes and along wide open beaches. By the time you are done, you will have looked out over both sides of our peninsula -- one side facing Buzzards Bay with Wareham, Marion and New Bedford in the distance and on the other side the sparkling Vineyard Sound with Martha's Vineyard three miles offshore and Nantucket peeking behind on a very clear day.
This eleven-mile journey is an incredible ride or walk. From Woods Hole, leave through the parking lot behind the Steamship Authority. At mile three, you can get off the main path and explore Downtown Falmouth with many nice shops and places to stop to eat. Then continue past the Sippewissett Marsh into West Falmouth where there are several good beaches (just off the bike path) and a great little market called the West Falmouth Market for a drink of water or a great deli sandwich. The final section takes you to North Falmouth. Named for Katherine Lee Bates (the author of "America the Beautiful" who was born right here in Falmouth) this bike trail is truly something that all should experience at least once in a lifetime. Put it on your bucket list! |
