The Night of the Event...
Guests entered the party via a green carpet emerging onto the Woods Hole Inn upper deck for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as the sun sets over Vineyard Sound. Moving downstairs to farm-style tables in the tent, guests were treated to a succulent four-course farm-to-table meal, expertly prepared by our visiting celebrity chef, Cal Peternell. After dinner, dessert was served as the stars come out and the southwest breeze blows gently through the waterfront locale. This was definitely a summer meal to remember…forever. |

Introducing Our Celebrity Chefs
Celebrity Chef:
Cal Peternell is currently the head chef at Chez Panisse, often called America’s first farm to table restaurant, in Berkely California. Cal grew up on a small farm in New Jersey where his family tended vegetable gardens and raised an assortment of livestock. Convivial family dinners were a focal point of every day, when homegrown seasonal produce, eggs, and meats were enjoyed, opinions and stories shared. After graduating with a BFA in painting from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Cal and his wife, sculptor Kathleen Henderson, moved to Lucca, Italy to pursue their art careers. While in Italy, the pervasive culture of food and wine was so seductive that, upon his return to the states, he embarked on a cooking career that started at Bix in San Francisco, and continued to Biba and The Blue Room in Boston, and back to San Francisco for a sous chef spot at Loretta Keller's Bizou. Cal started at Chez Panisse in 1995, was the chef in the Cafe from 2001 to 2012, and is now chef in the Restaurant . Cal and Kathleen have three sons, ages 8, 17, and 21. |
Celebrity Chef:
Anna Kovel is a New York City-based chef and food stylist. Raised by a family of good cooks, she spent part of her childhood in Ireland where her family lived self-sufficiently on a small farm. There they ate seasonally by necessity and Anna learned firsthand the value of hard work in their back-to-the-land experience. She began her culinary career in the Boston area, where she cooked at Upstairs at the Pudding, the Blue Room, and Biba. She spent many happy summers as a private chef on Martha’s Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands, where the local bounty inspired her cooking. Her interest in the French language led her to France, where she worked as a stagiaire at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine, and held a cooking position at Ecaille et Plume, a family-run restaurant in Paris. She moved to California to cook at Chez Panisse, and then to New York City where she worked as a caterer and was chef de cuisine of Nicole’s restaurant. Anna was a food editor at Martha Stewart Living from 2001-2012. There she created magazine stories and also produced cookbooks. She currently works as a freelance recipe developer and food stylist- her work can be seen on the pages of national magazines and publications such as Martha Stewart Living, Redbook and the Wall St. Journal. Anna and her husband live in Brooklyn with their two sons, aged 4 and 9, where they have a small herb garden and one raspberry bush. |
